Before the plague, kids in grades one through five would pile through these doors everyday, excited for another day of learning with their friends. When the virus hit Milwaukee, many parents took their children and fled the region. The few children whose parents could not protect them, however, stayed at school, the only other safe place they knew. Some teachers took this challenge in stride, turning elementary schools into protective communes to shield the children. The success rate of these communities, on the other hand, wasn't stellar. This small school was one of the bad ones. |
